Stepho’s Souvlaki Greek Taverna, a stalwart of downtown Vancouver’s bustling dining scene, closed its doors on Robson Street.
In fact…it actually closed 2 years ago – which is news to us and probably to many.
This came to light during our research for our upcoming West End patio list, when we stumbled upon the ‘permanently closed’ tag on their Google business listing.
Who is Stepho’s Souvlaki Greek Taverna?

Since opening its doors in late 90’s, Stepho’s has been a beacon of Greek culinary delight in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Famed for its affordability and generous portions, Stepho’s quickly became a local favourite and tourist destination.
They were commonly compared to Burnaby’s Anton’s in terms of its portion prowess. Eating at Stepho’s meant enough leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch and dinner.
Did anyone know?

It was not the ‘permanently closed’ tag itself that caught us off guard; it was the sheer invisibility of it all.
As regular visitors to the Robson West End area, we had not noticed any indication that suggested a permanent shutdown, no signs of another business taking over the premises or any construction underway.
Curious and somewhat incredulous, we sought confirmation from the staff at their Davie Street location. Much to our surprise, they informed us that the Robson Street branch had indeed closed its doors two years prior.
This information made things more puzzling. It’s surprising that the location has stayed empty and unchanged for so long since the closure.
The closure of Stepho’s Souvlaki Greek Taverna on Robson Street marks a significant change in Vancouver’s culinary scene as of late: a pattern of long-standing restaurants shutting down.
While the Robson Street location’s closure may be a jolt, fans of Stepho’s offerings can still enjoy their favourite Greek dishes at their Davie location.
