One of Gastown’s highest-rated restaurants is bringing its Greek street food to one of Vancouver’s most well-known food streets.
Skewers Souvlaki Pita Bar has announced it is opening a second location on Commercial Drive, with a March opening planned.
The team shared with Noms Magazine that the new spot will take over the former Indo Chinese Street Wok unit on 1851 Commercial Drive.
If you have not been to the original, Skewers has quietly built a strong following in Gastown since opening in late 2021.
It holds a 4.8 star rating on Google and has earned a lot praise for its Greek-style skewers, souvlaki wraps, and platters.
The Gastown location on Powell Street is a small space, but it has developed a reputation that far outweighs its size.
Regulars tend to talk about the generous portions, the 24-hour marinade, and the crispy fries.
According to a report by The Georgia Straight, the restaurant was first founded by Niko Manoussakis, a second-generation restaurateur who grew up working in his parents’ kitchens starting at an early age.
He spent years perfecting his recipes and sourcing quality ingredients before launching the Gastown location.
In early 2024, ownership passed to Kulwant Dulay, who brought over 25 years of experience from West Coast restaurants including Quattro in Whistler and Ya-Ya’s Oyster Bar in Horseshoe Bay.
The menu has stayed focused on what made the spot popular in the first place.
According to the restaurant’s Instagram, all the favourites will be available at the upcoming Commercial Drive location, including the skewers, souvlaki wraps, and platters.
Commercial Drive already has a deep history with Mediterranean food, so a focused Greek street food spot with a proven track record should fit right in on the strip.
The team shared that there’s still some work to be done and could not share an exact opening date in March.
Skewers Souvlaki Commercial now joins a list of upcoming food spots in Vancouver like Aura, TURF Main, and Khaosan Street Food.
