Burnaby Japanese Tempura Bowl Spot Just Quietly Shuts Down After 5 Years

One of Brentwood’s go-to spots for crispy tempura bowls has quietly gone dark, and the unit has already flipped to something new.

Tendon Kohaku’s Brentwood location, the Burnaby tempura-donburi specialist on Rosser Avenue, has shut down.

A Noms Magazine community member (xqsme_vancouver) let us know they found the unit closed last week, with the gate pulled down and a notice on its wall.

There was no farewell announcement, just a quiet exit, so for regulars who had not been by in a few weeks the news likely comes as a surprise.

Tendon Kohaku is a Singapore-based Japanese tempura franchise that built its following on tempura donburi, bowls of rice piled with tempura and finished with the brand’s signature Kohaku sauce.

The name leans into that look, with “kohaku” meaning amber, a nod to the golden colour the batter fries up to.

The tempura chain made its first debut in Downtown Vancouver back in mid 2021 and expanded to Burnaby’s Station Square and then to Brentwood in Q3 of the same year.

Here is the part that softens the blow.

Locally, Tendon Kohaku is run by the local franchise team behind Kokoro Mazesoba and the Hungry Duck on West 4th, so this was not a case of the team walking away from the space completely.

They have shared with Noms Magazine that they’ve already converted the unit into a new sister concept called Hungry Tiger, which soft opened on Friday, June 12.

If you are specifically after the tempura bowls, the brand itself is not going anywhere.

Tendon Kohaku still has its Burnaby Station Square and Downtown Vancouver outposts open, so between those two, fans have somewhere to chase the amber-fried bowls.

The Brentwood closure still lands during a heavy stretch for Burnaby dining, joining recent closures like Kingspark Good Food, Bella Gelateria Brentwood, and Roadside Spicy Pot.
