There has been a diner at Main and Broadway since 1949.
On August 23, the current one serves its last plate.
Fable Diner is closing its Mount Pleasant location after 10 years, and the reason it gave is the hole in the ground down the street.
The restaurant said it could not secure a favourable long-term lease or renegotiate its ongoing financial obligations.
And the delayed completion of the nearby Broadway Subway station, with no definite finish date confirmed, left terms it could not survive.
The skytrain expansion is already 2 years delayed.
And the devastating part of the construction is on Broadway street itself, where the road in front of Fable Diner was closed off for months.
Although that road has now partially opened back up for cars, the pain has already been inflicted for all the businesses along the stretch.
The BC provincial government has also refused to provide any financial relief or aid for the affected businesses.
Many critics point to this as a way for the government to avoid setting a precedent.
“It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re proud of what we’ve built here and the community that has grown around the restaurant,” said owner Ron MacGillivray.
He added that while nothing is confirmed, the team would love to explore bringing Fable Diner back in another location or as a food truck down the road.
The subway line that shaped this decision was once due in late 2025.
It is now scheduled to open in fall 2027.
Fable is not the first restaurant on this corridor to run out of runway waiting for it.
Simit Bakery closed in June 2024 after six years, and the notice in its window read, “Sorry we couldn’t make it due to the construction.”
The Greek at 382 West Broadway lasted about 21 months before closing in September 2025, citing delays that made it impossible to hold on until the line opened.
YuShang Hot Pot at 950 West Broadway closed in August 2024 after six years, though it never said exactly why.
But the construction in front of their building is kinda self-explanatory.
What makes this one land differently is the room.
Fable Diner took over the ground floor of the historic Lee Building in July 2016, following Aristocratic Diners, which had fed that corner for 67 years after opening in 1949.
The space came with booths, counter seating, and turquoise trim, and Fable kept the format rather than gutting it.
The menu ran burgers, shakes, and fries alongside salads, sandwiches, and all-day breakfast, built on locally sourced ingredients.
The diner even appeared on Food Network’s Diners Drive-Ins and Dives, season 29, episode 17.
The wider group is not going anywhere.
Fable Kitchen continues on West 4th Avenue, and Fable Diner and Grill continues on Richards Street.
Only the Mount Pleasant room is closing.
If you have a booth you have always sat in, August 23 is the last day to use it.
The team says it will welcome guests through that final service.
Fable Diner joins other recent Vancouver closures including Simpatico, Lucy’s Eastside Diner, and Kuro Katsu.
