After a horrible fire ripped through the kitchen two years ago, Kerrisdale’s longtime seafood restaurant is finally back in action!
Fish Cafe is now open again at its original location at 2053 W 41st Ave.
Owner Marcus Stiller shared with Noms Magazine that the restaurant is finally open again.
“It feels great to be back and being able to welcome back all our customers from the past 26 years,” he wrote.
The horrible fire happened on September 29, 2024, and it completely took the kitchen and dining room apart.
The walls were charred, ceilings had even come down and the kitchen had been reduced to rubble.
Neighbouring Japanese spot Nakamura took less damage from the same blaze but was also closed for a considerable time.
The room that has come back is not the room that burned.
The interior was rebuilt from the floor up, and it now seats 32.
“The decor is much more bright and modern, nice casual west coast feel,” Marcus said.
White walls carry four oversized painted fish, a red snapper the height of a person among them.
Rattan globe pendants hang over a black banquette, the chairs are pale wood, the tables are marble topped, and a new wood patio has gone in along the sidewalk out front.
The food is the part that did not change.
“Menu is pretty much similar,” Marcus said.
The chalkboard behind the counter still runs fish and chips in snapper, salmon, halibut and ling cod, one piece through three, with grilled or blackened mains in salmon, steelhead, snapper, halibut and trout.
Calamari, mussels, crab cakes and clam chowder hold the front of the board, the seafood platter is still there for one or for two, and there are caesar, house and greek salads.
More is coming once the kitchen settles.
“Once we settle in and get accustomed to the new equipment etc I will add fish tacos, ceviche plus plus,” Marcus shared.
The wait ran months longer than anyone wanted.
In May he told us he was about three weeks out, which pointed at the start of June, and in June he was still waiting on a business licence and an occupancy permit.
Kerrisdale readers were still writing to us in the middle of July to ask whether the phone would ever get picked up.
Well now they’re back!
Fish Cafe joins other recently opened Vancouver food spots like TURF Main Street, Ninth Cup, and Zab Bite Express.
