A New Chinese Congee Spot Just Quietly Opened in Richmond’s Admiralty Centre

If you have been missing congee at Admiralty Centre’s food court, well its back.

Mui Hung Kee Foods has soft-opened earlier this week in the Richmond food court, taking over the previous Joyful Congee unit, which shut down back in early February.

The new stall brings a pretty extensive menu that covers congee, noodles in soup, rice noodle rolls, lo mei noodles, Hainanese chicken rice, curry rice plates, and a lineup of classic HK-style snacks.

On the congee side, you are looking at options like giant grouper sliced fish congee, mixed pork offal congee, Shatin-style chicken congee , and century egg with lean pork.

The rice noodle roll section has sliced beef, minced beef, scallion and dried shrimp, egg and green onion, corn and tender pork, and pork liver, all priced between $8.50 and $9.50.

There is also a full noodle soup menu with fresh shrimp wonton, beef brisket, beef tendon, braised pork knuckle, and more.

If you are looking for something heartier, the rice dishes include Hainanese chicken on rice, curry beef brisket with rice, and rose soy sauce chicken leg on rice.

The snack menu has pan-fried turnip cake, taro cake, water chestnut cake, and curry fish balls.

Drinks are straightforward HK-style milk tea, lemon tea, lemon water, and lemon honey, with hot drinks starting at $3 and iced versions going up to $4.50.

We stopped by on a weekday afternoon earlier this week and ordered the mixed pork offal congee, the mixed beef rice noodle roll, and an iced lemon tea, all staff recommendations.

The rice noodle rolls looked a bit lacking in ingredients and the congee had promise initially, but there was an unfortunate white pepper mishap with our order.

When we picked up our congee, a staff member mentioned they had white pepper on the side.

We said ok, and she took that as a go-ahead to add it directly to the bowl.

The problem was she added a lot of it.

We tried scooping some out, but it ended up overpowering the whole bowl anyway.

So it is kinda hard to say whether the congee was good or not.

The iced lemon tea also ran way too sweet for our taste.

But these are the kinds of things you expect during a soft opening.

Every new spot goes through a tuning period, and Mui Hung Kee Foods is no different.
