Onigiri Ya is making another big move, and this time, it’s heading to Maruhachi Gaiden on Main Street.

Starting January 27th, the grab-and-go onigiri brand has expanded its concept by introducing made-to-order Onigiri at this location.

This allows customers to dine in and enjoy freshly prepared rice balls alongside Maruhachi’s signature ramen and tsukemen.

Dubbed “Onigiri Ya Live!”, this new experience brings a different approach from their Broadway outpost, which focuses purely on quick, grab-and-go service.

At Maruhachi Gaiden, customers will now get to enjoy over 20 varieties of Onigiri, starting at $3.99 each, with their ramen.

For those unfamiliar, Onigiri Ya first launched in September 2024, taking over the former West Broadway Menya Juemon ramen shop, which was originally opened as a sister restaurant to Maruhachi Ramen.

Since its debut, Onigiri Ya has quickly gained a following for its affordable, high-quality onigiri, offering everything from classic tuna mayo and salmon to unique creations like unagi cream cheese and pork kimchi.

Their menu also includes tonjiru (pork and veggie miso soup) and bento options, making it a well-rounded stop for a quick but satisfying meal.

With this new expansion into Maruhachi Gaiden, Onigiri Ya fans can now enjoy their favourite handmade onigiri in a sit-down setting while still having access to Maruhachi’s renowned ramen offerings.

It’s a perfect match for those craving a hearty meal with a mix of warm broths and freshly made rice balls.

While Onigiri service at Maruhachi Gaiden will initially run Monday to Friday from 11:30 AM to 9:00 PM, there are plans to extend it to weekends once operations settle.

This latest move marks another evolution for Onigiri Ya, proving that its simple yet high-quality approach to Japanese comfort food is resonating with Vancouver’s food lovers.
