The rumors were sadly true.
For a while, we’ve been hearing whispers about Mello closing one of their locations, and today, it’s official.
One of Vancouver’s best donut shops has confirmed that their Arbutus location will be shutting down next week, thanks to—surprise, surprise—redevelopment.
On February 11th, Mello took to Instagram to break the news, and let’s just say, the comment section was basically one big cry fest.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our Arbutus Mello location. Due to the redevelopment of the building, our last day of operation will be February 17, Family Day. Many of you may have already heard the news, but this was an unavoidable situation, and we are truly heartbroken and saddened by it.”
Mello first opened its Chinatown flagship in 2019, quickly making a name for itself with its pillowy-soft Korean brioche donuts.
By 2022, they expanded to Arbutus, setting up shop in a beautifully designed space inside a small complex.
But unfortunately, that building has now been approved for rezoning into a six-story mixed-use apartment project, forcing Mello to pack up.
The last day to grab their signature donuts at the Arbutus location is February 17, but donut lovers can still get their fix at Mello’s Chinatown store, which remains open.
The team also teased that this isn’t the end and hinted at a potential future comeback.
Could we see Mello popping up in Burnaby or Richmond next?
We’ll have to wait and see.
But Mello now joins a long list of food spots that have been forced out due to redevelopment.
Just last month, Paragon Tea Room shared they’re getting booted out due to their Cambie location’s building being redeveloped.
For now, make sure to drop by before the 17th and send off this beloved spot with one last bite of their legendary donuts.
