Vancouver’s First Digital Food Hall Quietly Closes Its Doors

It seems the trend of closures in the food industry does not spare even the innovative and tech-focused establishments.

We spotted a sign announcing the closure, posted on a chair facing the front door of Food Republic in downtown Vancouver.

Launched in April 2023, Food Republic introduced a novel concept to the Vancouver food scene.

Customers could order online, use kiosks for quick pickups, enjoy meals in the hall, or have them delivered right to their doorsteps.

Like a food hall, it had a variety of dining options from sandwiches and salads to poke (from Pacific Poke), Sushi, and even slices of cake from the Cheesecake Factory Bakery.

And unlike your typical ghost kitchen, Food Republic made it so you can watch your meals get made through the glass windows.

However, a sign recently spotted at the venue tells a different story—a farewell note from the Food Republic team.

In it, they express heartfelt thanks to their patrons for the support over the years, announcing March 22, 2024, as their last day of operation.

The message highlighted their gratitude and the joy they found in serving their customers.

Located near the bustling Vancouver Central Public Library, Food Republic was in a prime spot with plenty of foot traffic and nearby workers.

Despite this advantageous location, it appears that success remained elusive.

Even the most innovative and tech-focused ventures are not immune to the challenges that have led to the shuttering of many establishments.
