The Richmond unit that went dark after a sewage shutdown earlier this year is getting a new life, and the signage is already up.
We spotted signs for a new brand called Chengdu Noodle, which is taking over the former YGF Malatang location on Ackroyd Road in Richmond.
If the address looks familiar, it should.
We reported earlier this month that YGF Malatang at this location had permanently closed after being shut down by Vancouver Coastal Health over sewage contamination in February.
Two other businesses in the same plaza were able to reopen within days, but YGF never did.
The sign came down, the closure order was removed, and the business was reportedly sold to a new operator.
Now we know what is moving in.
The new signage reads “Chengdu Noodle” in bold red lettering across the top of the unit, with both English and Chinese text.
Below the name, the sign lists out what to expect: handmade steamed buns, wontons, dumplings, Chengdu style pancakes, house special noodles, Chengdu mala hot pot bowl, and specialty snacks and street eats.
That is a pretty wide range for a single shop, and it leans heavily into Chengdu-style street food.
Peeking through the windows, the interior looks like it has only gone through minor adjustments.
The previous YGF branding has been stripped out, but the layout and fixtures appear largely the same.
That could mean they are close to opening, since they do not need a full buildout.
The sign on the storefront also tags the food as “fresh, spicy, authentic,” and advertises that items are made on site.
For a unit that was shut down over a sewage issue just two months ago, the turnaround has been quick.
A new operator, new signage, and what looks like a nearly ready interior.
It will be interesting to see whether the new concept can bring fresh energy to a space that had a rough ending under its previous tenant.
No opening date has been posted yet, but based on how close the space looks to being ready, it may not be far off.
Chengdu Noodle now joins other upcoming Richmond food spots like Daydreamers by Cafe 33, Dao Field Noodle Shop, and Taoke.
