A fire broke out on the rooftop of a Yaletown building on Thursday evening, forcing one of the neighbourhood’s well-known restaurants to temporarily shut its doors.

Elisa Steak, the Toptable Group steakhouse located inside the Empress Galleria on Homer Street, announced it will be temporarily closed for the next couple of weeks following the incident.

According to CityNews, the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service responded to the call just after 8 PM on April 16, sending seven fire trucks to the scene after heavy smoke was spotted coming from the roof.

Crews discovered a heavy grease fire in the rooftop venting system.

The fire was cleared by 10:25 PM and Homer Street was reopened shortly after.

No injuries were reported.

Elisa described the incident as an electrical fire on the roof of the building in a post shared to Instagram.

The restaurant confirmed it has sustained some water and fire damage as a result.

In the same post, the restaurant noted that its sister restaurants CinCin, Blue Water Cafe, and Provisions are all still open and welcoming guests in the meantime.

Elisa itself has been a fixture of the Yaletown dining scene since opening at the Empress Galleria.

The steakhouse is known for its dry-aged cuts, seafood towers, and cocktail program, and it regularly draws crowds on weekends and special occasions.

The temporary closure means anyone with upcoming reservations at Elisa will need to make alternative plans for the time being.

The restaurant has not shared a specific reopening date, only saying it expects to be closed for the next couple of weeks while repairs are completed.

Given the nature of fire and water damage, the timeline could shift depending on how the restoration process goes.
