Vancouver Main Street Japanese Izakaya Temporarily Closed Due To Fire

A Main Street storefront we have walked past plenty of times now has yellow warning labels taped across the door, and the date on the notice was the bigger surprise.

Kaori Izakaya, the longtime Japanese sushi and grill spot on Main Street, has actually been closed since a fire on February 13.

We spotted the closure on a recent walk down the block.

The yellow notice posted on the exterior cites the fire as the reason, and the wellness shop directly next door appears to have been affected as well, with similar warning tape across its frontage.

What stood out is that we have not been able to find any news coverage of the fire from any local outlet.

Three months in, the closure had been flying entirely under the radar.

Kaori opened on Main Street back in 2018 and quietly built the kind of regular following that does not need press to stay busy.

Locals consistently praise the food as good and the prices as reasonable, two things that are increasingly rare in Vancouver Japanese dining.

The menu spans the standard izakaya territory, with sushi rolls, sashimi, and grill items as the anchors.

Right now the storefront is dark, the doors are sealed, and there is no signage on site indicating when, or whether, Kaori plans to reopen.

The warning notice does not include a reopening date.

Their website remains live, but does not currently address the fire or the closure.

Until then, the unit is in limbo.

The wellness shop next door is in a similar holding pattern, with the same warning tape across the front and no public update.

Vancouver fire incidents at small independent businesses do not always make the news cycle, especially when the damage is contained to a single unit and there are no injuries reported.

That is likely why this one slipped through.
