Vancouver’s Shanghai Pan-Fried Bun Shop on Cambie Is Closing After Over 6 Years

A Shanghai pan-fried bun shop on Vancouver’s Cambie Street is closing on October 15 because its lease is ending.

Dong Tai Xiang Shanghai Dim Sum announced on Red Note that its Vancouver branch at 3250 Cambie Street will close for good that day.

“Because our lease is ending, we will officially close,” the post reads.

The shop opened in 2019 as the Shanghai brand’s first North American location.

Its Red Note account goes by 东泰祥生煎馆, which translates to Dong Tai Xiang Shengjian House.

That’s the giveaway on what to order.

Shengjianbao are Shanghai’s pan-fried pork buns, and the farewell poster shows a tray of them topped with sesame seeds and green onion.

In reviews and comments over the years, diners have often called the Cambie shop’s shengjianbao some of the best in the city.

Back in Shanghai, the brand is known as a cheap eats stop, with shops that run around the clock.

“It’s been such a joy bringing those familiar Shanghai flavors to Vancouver all this time,” the team wrote.

The post signs off with “Hope to see you again someday!” and doesn’t mention a new Vancouver location.

Dong Tai Xiang got here early.

Since then, more Chinese chains have picked Metro Vancouver for a first shop on this side of the Pacific.

Shanghai’s Yang’s Dumpling chose Richmond for its first BC location, and hand-pulled noodle chain Mr. Noodle Chen was set to soft open its first North American restaurant in Richmond on September 28.

If the Cambie shop was your shengjianbao stop, October 15 is the last day to get a tray.

Dong Tai Xiang joins other recent Vancouver closures like Megabite on Granville Street, Kim House and Caffè Artigiano on Main Street.
