We spotted new signs for Kano Sushi Market up at 5951 Minoru Boulevard, Unit 153 in Richmond, the storefront where the custom dessert shop First Bite closed in May.
Two things from the last tenant are still hanging on the door: a red paper cut reading zhao cai jin bao, the new year wish for wealth and treasure, and a security company sticker.
Neither has been scraped, which tells you roughly how recent the handover is.
There is almost nothing published about Kano beyond a new Google listing, which describes it as a takeout sushi shop focusing on premium Japanese seafood.
So it’s still up in the air about what exactly they’ll be offering to be considered “premium sushi takeout”.
But if we had to guess, it will likely be aburi sushi, fresh sashimi, and other fancy rolls.
We doubt it will stray far from what you’ve already know and tried at a mid-to-higher-end sushi restaurant in the city.
But we’ll have to wait and see for sure.
Inside, the previous cute aesthetic from First Bite has been completely gutted.
What seems to be staying is the counter and display case.
The unit isn’t very large, but it’s fitting for a small takeout-only sushi shop.
Four months is a fast turnaround for a Richmond unit, and a dessert shop becoming a seafood counter is about as clean a break as a room can make.
Kano Sushi Market joins a list of Richmond spots working toward opening, including Molly Tea Richmond Centre, Dolan on Leslie Road, and Mr. Noodle Chen.
