Vancouver’s Popular Japanese Coffee Shop Is Opening A New Roastery In Mount Pleasant

Last updated:

A popular Vancouver Japanese coffee spot is gearing up for a big Mount Pleasant move, and this one comes with a bakery program attached.

OIDE Coffee, the family-run Japanese cafe currently tucked inside the Waterfall Building, has revealed the address for its second location.

OIDE LABO, which will double as the team’s first full roastery, is slated for the ground floor of the new Chroma complex at the edge of Mount Pleasant.

A recent hiring post from the team pegs the new shop’s start potentially for May, with the search currently on for an experienced pastry and bakery chef.

That hiring clue points to more than just coffee at OIDE LABO.

The team is planning a more thorough lineup of baked goods on the new menu.

Oide’s origin story goes back to 2019.

Husband and wife Rika and Kento Kitayama first opened a tiny takeout window in the Downtown Eastside under the name iktsuarpok coffee stand.

That original shop, just steps from Gastown, built a following for its Japanese-leaning approach and minimalist 30-inch-window set-up.

They eventually relocated and rebranded, landing in the iconic Waterfall Building near Granville Island as OIDE Coffee, which means “come here” in Japanese.

The Waterfall Building shop has become a quiet favourite for specialty coffee drinkers, with hand-crafted filter on weekends and Japanese-inspired matcha drinks on weekdays.

OIDE LABO is set to be a different chapter for the brand.

The “LABO” name hints at the shop’s experimental roastery concept, where the team plans to roast their own coffee in-house.

Pair that with a pastry program led by a dedicated chef, and this is a real step up from the takeout window where the whole thing started seven years ago.

The location also plants OIDE squarely in Mount Pleasant, a neighbourhood that has quietly become one of Vancouver’s strongest stretches for independent cafes and bakeries.

No firm opening date has been shared beyond the May start, and more details on the bakery lineup are expected as the team settles into the new space.
