The signage went up before anything else did.
No website, no Instagram, no phone number, and no menu.
A spot called Yue Sushi has put its name on a unit inside Burnaby’s Crystal Mall, and that is currently the entire public record on it.
We spotted the new signage on a walk through the mall.
The unit was most recently Meet Boss, a short-lived tenant selling meat and other hot pot supplies, which did not last long enough to build much of a following.
What makes this worth flagging is the category, not the tenant.
Crystal Mall runs roughly 250 stores across two floors, and it has always been oriented squarely to the local Chinese community.
Sushi has never really been part of that.
Whether Yue Sushi turns out to be a sit-down restaurant, a takeout counter or a food court style stall is not clear yet.
Nobody behind it has surfaced publicly, and no opening date has been posted.
Searches turn up nothing at all, which usually points to a small independent operator who has not started marketing rather than a chain with a rollout plan behind it.
It also lands in the middle of an unusually busy stretch for a mall that normally turns over quietly.
One Cafe, the Hong Kong cafe that draws a line even at 3pm on a weekday, is opening a second stall in the same building’s food court.
That one is going into the unit Kingspark Good Food vacated in early June, and the team has told us the second stall will run a wider menu than the original rather than clone it.
There is also a new noodle shop going in beside Korean Noodle House, which has not attached a name to itself either.
Yue Sushi joins other upcoming Burnaby food spots like Captain’s Boil at Gilmore, Chayan at Metrotown, and Thrifty Foods at Brentwood.
