Diabetes Plaza just gained an unlikely tenant.
Unique Bakery officially opened its second Richmond location at Union Square Shopping Centre over the weekend, slotting into the former DIY craft unit right beside One Cake.
For a plaza locals jokingly call Diabetes Plaza, packed with bubble tea, fruit tea, and dessert-forward bakeries, Unique Bakery is built around the opposite pitch.
The brand leans low sugar, low oil, and naturally fermented, with calorie counts printed on most price tags.
That positioning sets it apart from neighbours like One Cake and Flour Dance Bakery, which all lean richer and sweeter.
Inside the new shop, the lineup mirrors what the original Aberdeen Square location has been turning out.
Milk Custard Bun (297 cal) and Savory Scallion Bun (313 cal) sit in the front display at $4.99 each.
A flat pretzel rack runs through Chocolate, Matcha, Black Sesame, Pistachio White, and Cumin varieties, priced $3.99 to $6.99 depending on flavour.
Sweet Bread toast loaves include a Squash Sweet Toast at $7.99 and a Coconut Raisin Cheese Toast at $8.99, both packaged in the brand’s kraft paper sleeves.
You will also find European boules, German pretzels, Japanese bagels, and seeded country loaves rotating through the baskets.
If the name rings a bell, it should.
Unique Bakery originally launched in Burnaby in 2020 with a natural fermentation focus, then expanded to Richmond in 2024 by taking over the former Khaykery Bakery space next to Aberdeen Centre Skytrain Station.
The early following came from social-first promotion and a kraft-bag aesthetic that made the brand quick to spot in any plaza.
The Burnaby flagship was shut down soon after as the team consolidated everything to Richmond.
This second Union Square location now puts two Unique Bakery shops within a few minutes of each other.
Unique Bakery Union Square joins the list of recently opened food spots in Richmond, like Happy Bowl Kitchen, Wo Fung Noodle Express, and Yummy Rice Roll.
