The handwritten sign taped in the window still promises the diner will be back soon.
But the business listing that went up a week later says otherwise.
Lucy’s Eastside Diner, the retro throwback on Main Street, has quietly closed after 16 years.
A Noms community member (schnackypants) flagged it to us in late July, wondering if we knew when the place shut down.
We walked by on a hot summer weekend and found the doors locked, with “CLOSED BE BACK SOON” scrawled in red marker on a sheet of paper in the window.
Inside, nothing had been touched.
Menus were still stacked on the lunch counter, the swivel stools were still lined up, and a wooden high chair was still parked beside the bar.
The quiet ending actually followed a rough early summer.
A routine Vancouver Coastal Health inspection on June 11 logged three critical infractions, including refrigerated food held at unsafe temperatures and no staff member on shift with a valid FOODSAFE certificate while the owner was away.
The report also flagged that the “premises has signs of rodent activity” and signs of insect activity.
On June 24, the health authority ordered the diner closed over the pest infestation.
It was cleared to reopen by July 2.
So this means that Lucy’s either never reopened after the health closure or opened back up for a very short time before going dark again.
About a couple days after our walk-by, a local business broker introduced the unit on Instagram as a new listing: 32 seats, a fully equipped vented kitchen, a liquor licence, and a $150,000 asking price that includes the furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
The listing pitches buyers on continuing the existing concept or introducing a new food and beverage operation entirely, subject to landlord and municipal approval.
Google now tags Lucy’s as permanently closed, and its old website redirects to a placeholder page.
Lucy’s opened in October 2010, from Erv Salvadore and Casey Thiessen, the couple behind the Whip a few blocks away.
The formula never really changed in 16 years: swivel stools at a mirrored counter, vinyl booths, burgers, melts, milkshakes, and all-day breakfast.
In its early years it ran 24 hours a day, which made it one of the only rooms in the city where you could order a stack of pancakes at 3am.
The hours eventually pulled back to 8am opens and late nights on weekends, but the old identity stayed in the window.
The $9.99 early bird breakfast sign was still up when we walked by.
So was the photo wall from the house eating challenge, rows of snapshots of every challenger who tried.
Whoever buys the space inherits all of it, or strips it out.
