Eight months after the last nigiri went over the counter, the reservation book is open again.
Matsuzushi, the family sushi counter in Port Moody that closed at the end of 2025 after 23 years, held its grand opening on September 4 and is now open again.
A carousel posted August 29 laid out the hours: lunch 11:30am to 2:30pm with last call at 2pm, dinner 5pm to 9:30pm with last call at 9pm, closed Sundays and Mondays.
It is dine-in only for now.
The headline item is the chef’s selection omakase, 12 pieces of nigiri and soup for $55.
That is up from the $50 for eleven pieces, miso soup and a hand roll the old counter charged last year, and a long way from the $25 it ran in 2017.
The rest of the opening menu reads like the old one: assorted sashimi in three or seven kinds, a nigiri and roll set, daily soup, ocean and garden salads, goma-ae, tsukemono, sunomono with crab, prawn or octopus, grilled sablefish and chawanmushi.
Prices for everything beyond the omakase “will be announced soon,” the menu card says.
The person behind the counter is the big change.
Chef Hataguchi, who started making sushi in 1962 and worked in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya before opening the first Matsuzushi on North Road in 2001, is not returning.
The Matsuzushi team told Noms Magazine in August that Kodai Hattori, a former colleague and close friend of the previous owner, has taken over the shop, and that Hataguchi is opening an omakase spot in Japan.
The shop’s own December post described the handover as passing “from its beloved grandfather owner to the next generation.”
For a shop that ran on a husband and wife for two decades, with Hataguchi at the counter and his wife running the front and the kitchen, the question regulars kept asking under every post was whether the sushi would be the same.
The team’s answer in August was that this iteration “will largely remain the same in menu experience.”
