North Vancouver’s Beloved Family Run Ice Cream Shop Is Closing After 9 Years

September 7 is the last day anyone gets a scoop at the counter where four brothers grew up working.

Welcome Parlour, the family-run ice cream shop in the Shipyards, is closing after nine years on the North Shore.

The Widgery-Webber family announced it on the shop’s Instagram, and the comment section filled with neighbours inside three days.

The run started back in March 2017 at 277 East 8th Street, near St. Andrews, in a residential stretch of North Vancouver that had nothing else like it.

The waterfront shop at 125 Victory Ship Way opened on June 28, 2019.

East 8th closed the following year, and the Shipyards has carried the name alone since 2020.

Nothing in the announcement points to rent, sales, or a landlord.

The family framed it as a decision, not a defeat.

“What started as a family business became so much more because of you,” the post reads. “Come say hello and have a scoop one last time.”

Ian Widgery ran the shop, and his four sons worked the counter growing up, alongside a long rotation of other North Shore teenagers.

That is most of what a neighbourhood ice cream shop actually is.

The product held up its end too.

Welcome Parlour billed itself as the only natural ice cream company in North Vancouver, mixing small batches fresh daily rather than building flavours out of a pre-made base.

The counter ran scoops, sundaes, shakes, floats, and custom pints packed to order.

The wider picture around it is not a kind one right now.

Welcome Parlour is the fourth Metro Vancouver spot in three weeks to post a version of the same letter.

The reasons differ every time, and Porker Face in Burnaby went down to an expired lease rather than a choice.

This one reads as the other kind, which does not change what the North Shore is losing.

That is a small-batch ice cream counter on the waterfront, going quiet in the last two weeks of the season it was built for.

Welcome Parlour joins recent Metro Vancouver closures including COFU on Granville Island, Porker Face in Burnaby, and Unni Pastries in the West End.
