Downtown Vancouver’s culinary scene is sadly losing a longtime Italian gem.
Autostrada shared that they will be shutting down their downtown Pender Street location.
Autostrada’s journey on Pender Street began with a different name.
In 2014, Chef Lucais Syme and his wife, Gillian Book, introduced Cinara, an establishment that quickly gained acclaim for its blend of old-world charm and modern culinary flair.
As the era of Cinara drew to a close in December 2018, the venue transformed through extensive renovations, rebranding as Autostrada.
This new iteration brought a more casual ambiance while maintaining the high standards of dining excellence established by its predecessor.
A Bittersweet Goodbye
On January 20th, a heartfelt goodbye message was shared on Autostrada’s official Instagram about the upcoming closure of the Pender Street location.
Reflecting on a decade of memories and successes, the closure was attributed to the expiry of their lease and the evolving challenges of maintaining a small neighborhood restaurant.
…the reality is that restaurant ownership — and the financial viability of small neighbourhood joints — just ain’t what it used to be.

The announcement highlighted the emotional and logistical complexities of the decision while reassuring patrons that the current service team would continue to shine in other locations.
While the Pender Street location closes its doors, the Autostrada spirit will thrive at their Vancouver House venue and beyond.
Led by Chef Lucais alongside Chef Cory, the essence of the original Autostrada will find a new home, promising to continue the legacy of Italian culinary excellence.

True to the adage ‘when one door closes, another opens’, Autostrada has hinted at exciting future plans.
A new Autostrada location is hinted to be in the works.
Autostrada on Pender’s official last night of service will be on January 27th.
It’s an invitation to experience the culinary magic one last time, a chance to bid farewell to a beloved chapter in Vancouver’s Italian dining story.
