Steveston locals will soon have to say goodbye to a longtime ice cream shop.
B&P Ice-Cream shared on Instagram that they’re closing on September 30, as their final day of business.
The reason is not rent, and it is not a lease running out.
The owner is retiring.
The shop said so itself in early August, on a graphic that reads “SHOP OWNER WILL RETIRE SOON, THANK YOU FOR YEARS OF SUPPORT.”
The reaction was the story.
That post drew more than a thousand likes and a comment section that reads like a yearbook, with people writing “my childhood” under a photo of a window.
One person wrote about buying a giant pint of matcha and finishing it within days.
Another asked how they were supposed to satisfy a root beer ice cream craving now.
The family-run spot never quite got the same online media buzz as Timothy’s up the block, but as you see from the locals’ comments, it will be one that people will miss.
If you have never stopped, the setup is simple, and it has not really changed since it opened 15+ years ago.
A blue and white striped awning, a cartoon octopus in an ice cream hat on the wall, and a bank of laminated menu boards that take a while to read.
Those boards cover Canadian ice cream, Italian gelato and sorbetto, egg waffles, and a full bubble tea list.
During the summertime, it is a busy corner where people enjoy their frozen dessert and watch the village go by.
There is no word yet on what happens to the unit after that, and no sale or successor has been announced.
