Burnaby Korean Dessert Cafe Quietly Closes After 8 Years

Recently, the food scene around the Metrotown area is buzzing with changes.

One shift is the closure of Sulmida Cafe, right across from the Metrotown Superstore.

We spotted a new sign for a cafe offering Chai and Coffee taking its place, signaling the end of an era for this longtime Korean dessert spot.

Sulmida Cafe was known for its Korean inspired shaved ice, or Bingsu.

Unlike other shaved ice, Bingsu is made with frozen milk, giving it a creamy flavour that dessert lovers couldn’t resist.

Sulmida’s menu was a hit with items like mango cheesecake Bingsu, blueberry cheesecake Bingsu, and Kinako & cheesecake Bingsu.

They also offered dessert bread covered in strawberries, matcha, and other delightful flavours.

The closure of the Burnaby Sulmida Cafe marks the end of its presence in Metro Vancouver.

Once a popular chain with three locations in the area, Sulmida had already closed its Vancouver and Richmond spots.

The Burnaby location, which opened in 2016, was the last one standing.

Based on the last Google Review, it seemed to have closed its doors sometime in July 2024, ending its sweet run.

Its closing means that locals in the area will have to go elsewhere if they crave some Korean bingsu or dessert late in the night.
