In the heart of downtown, a beloved spot whispers its final farewell.

After a decade of serving up some of the city’s most innovative izakaya, sushi, and sashimi, Black Rice Izakaya is closing its doors on April 7.

The news, delivered with a heavy heart via an Instagram post on March 25th, has left many in Vancouver feeling a mix of sadness and gratitude.

For ten years, the spot was known for its creative takes on traditional Japanese cuisine, dazzling diners with everything from aburi to Teishoku sets, and their unique black rice.

For 3 years, JINMI, the soy raw marinated crab brand used Black Rice as a pick up location for its customers.

Chef Jinmi eventually opened up JINMI on Denman street earlier this March.

Despite the closure, the team behind Black Rice has hinted at “exciting news soon.”

What this means for the future is still wrapped in mystery, but it suggests that this isn’t the end of their culinary journey.

Before the doors close for good on April 7, there’s still a chance to experience Black Rice Izakaya.

Whether it’s for a final taste of their signature dishes or to raise a glass to the memories made, now is the time to stop by one last time.
