Ten months is all the West End gave Vancouver’s first dedicated gyukatsu restaurant.
Kuro Katsu at 1471 Robson Street has quietly closed.
We first walked by during its stated opening hours and found the lights dark, with furniture and fixtures being shifted around inside.
On a return pass this week, the windows were papered over with Boas Construction sign and the room behind them had been gutted.
Google also tags the restaurant as permanently closed.
When the tag flipped is unclear, and no last day of service was ever announced.
There was no goodbye post that we could find, just a dark room, and then an empty shell on a busy stretch of Robson.
Kuro Katsu opened on October 3, 2025, and it arrived with a first-in-the-city pitch.
Gyukatsu, the Japanese beef cutlet, gets coated in panko and fried quickly so the outside crisps while the inside stays rare, and the diner finishes each slice on a small tabletop grill to their own doneness.
The appeal is theatre as much as flavour: rare beef hitting a hot grill at your own table, the hiss, the doneness dialed to each bite.
No other Vancouver restaurant had built its whole menu around that ritual.
The sets came with rice, miso soup, shredded cabbage, and dipping sauces, with pork tenderloin katsu and chicken karaage for the beef-averse, and a Kuro Special Set that stacked multiple cuts with shrimp tempura.
The backstory had a wrinkle worth remembering.
The same owner ran Kyochon Chicken in the space before it, and converted their own restaurant into Kuro Katsu, a bet that a specialty concept would outdraw fried chicken on that block.
The bet lasted less than a year, and the address has now flipped concepts twice in quick succession.
What is taking over has not been announced.
Kuro Katsu joins other recent Vancouver closures, including Don at Kitsilano, Lucy’s Eastside Diner, and Simpatico.
