If you live in the West End and are a fan of croissants, this news will be music to your ears!
Angus T, which is often named in the top croissant listicles, just soft opened its new West End location on July 24 at 1305 Davie Street.
They took over the corner unit that housed Matchstick Coffee, before the coffee chain went dark at the end of March.
We went over anonymously on the weekend, mostly to look, entirely to bring a box home for family dinner.
The room is a serious upgrade on what a neighbourhood bakery usually gets.
But if you’ve been to their River District location, you’ll get the similar sleek vibes.
Black brick outside, high ceilings inside, long black light bars running the length of the ceiling, pale wood floors and tables, brass wall sconces and framed prints down the far wall.
They were still setting up parts of the room when we went, but the case was doing its job.
The pastry case reads like a flavour list more than a bakery counter.
Green tea, earl grey and black sesame all sit at $6.50, and the dark chocolate raspberry with a fresh raspberry pressed on top is $6.75.
The boards behind the counter run further, through double baked almond, pistachio raspberry, hazelnut chocolate, labneh cheese blueberry, pain au chocolat, pain suisse and pain aux raisin.
The savoury side is deeper than most croissant shops bother with, covering ham and gruyere, tuna and corn, spinach and feta, chicken and tomato, three cheese, balsamic onion jam and bacon, and a dijon pesto beef roll.
We took home green tea, earl grey and the dark chocolate raspberry croissants.
That last one was crowned the family favourite, and it has been a popular one at our office for a while now, so it was never really in question.
Flaky, airy, and a genuinely satisfying bite.
The kids wanted seconds, which is the only review that carries any weight at my table.
What makes this opening land is what it replaced.
Matchstick ran this Davie and Jervis corner for years and closed all four of its locations early this year, with this one shutting on March 31.
Four months later the same room is full again. That is FAST.
Angus T started on Mainland Street in Yaletown back in 2018 and built its entire identity around the croissant.
Davie Street is its second in Downtown Vancouver, and they are already building a third across from Waterfront Station at 320 Granville.
Angus T Davie joins other recently opened Vancouver food spots like Sushi California on Seymour Street, Krave Kulture at the Coal Harbour marina, and Pallet Coffee in Olympic Village.
