Richmond is losing a Japanese Hamburg steak and curry spot after two years.
Pound Steak shared the news in a closure notice, saying it will “officially close after business hours on October 31, 2026.”
The notice doesn’t give a reason.
“For the past two years, it has been our pleasure to serve you and share our passion for Japanese-style handcrafted Hamburg steak, curry and gyu-don,” it reads.
It also ends with a teaser: “We will see you soon with our concept in near future.”
The team told us a new concept will replace Pound Steak after it closes.
What that is stays under wraps for now.
Pound Steak took over the former Kizami space when it opened in late summer 2024.
When we covered the opening that September, the owner told us the idea came from his trips to Japan, where he fell for casual family restaurants serving curry and Hamburg steak.
The name came from letting diners pick the size of their steak, and the menu still sells them by the half pound or three-quarter pound, from the Hamburg steak to a flat iron, ribeye and striploin.
The Hamburg steak is handmade daily from beef and pork, and every steak and entree comes with a green salad plus unlimited soup and rice.
The detail we still remember is the self-serve station in the corner.
It had a rice cooker and pots of curry and miso soup, and anyone ordering an entree could help themselves to as much as they liked.
The lunch combo still comes with unlimited miso soup and curry rice, alongside dons like gyudon, chicken karaage and a Hamburg don with an onsen egg.
Back then, the room played 80s and 90s Japanese music, with vintage Totoro, Hello Kitty and Godzilla pieces brought over from Japan.
That’s a lot of personality to pack into a Leslie Road unit.
If you’ve been meaning to try the Hamburg steak or the gyudon, the last service is the evening of October 31.
