If your late-night Richmond habit revolves around yam balls and shaved ice, it now has a deadline.
Sweet Memory, the Taiwanese dessert and snack shop that opened at 8080 Leslie Road in 2019, is closing at the end of September.
The Memory Dining Group, the hospitality group behind Sweet Memory, announced on Instagram on September 17 the upcoming closure.
The reason is the plainest one in the business.
“Our current location will be closing at the end of September as our lease comes to an end,” the post says.
What it does not say is that the shop is completely finished.
“But this isn’t goodbye,” the same post continues.
“We’re already looking for a new home for Sweet Memory, and once our new location is confirmed, you’ll be the first to know.”
That leaves an open question about whether the next address stays in Richmond, and the comments went straight at it.
One reader wrote that they hoped it would reappear in another Richmond location, and another suggested Surrey, half joking.
The group replied only that it would update everyone as soon as possible.
The shop built its name on Taiwanese sweets, led by handmade tofu pudding, yam balls and shaved ice, with the tea jellies and toppings that go with them.
It also runs a savoury side that most dessert shops do not bother with, including skewers, squid, dumplings and pan fried mochi pancakes.
Sweet Memory is one of three brands under the same roof group.
Memory Corner is the Taiwanese restaurant on Garden City Road, Old Memory Kitchen sells frozen Taiwanese home cooking out of the same building as Sweet Memory, and the group has since added a Memory Corner in the Lougheed area.
So this is one storefront going dark rather than a company winding down, which is a better position than most closure announcements get to claim.
It still leaves a hole.
Richmond has plenty of bubble tea and not many places doing a proper bowl of douhua with a spread of toppings, especially late.
Sweet Memory joins other recently closed or closing Richmond food spots like Banh Mi Tres Bon, B&P Ice Cream, and Manzo Itamae.
