Vancouver MICHELIN Guide Adds 4 New Restaurants & Cuts 6 in 2024

The night everyone has been waiting for has arrived!

On October 3rd, the MICHELIN Guide revealed its 2024 selections at the Commodore Ballroom, marking the third year of the guide in Vancouver.

In a star-studded event, the MICHELIN Guide welcomed a new star to its prestigious roster: Sushi Masuda.

For many, Sushi Masuda is a restaurant they’ve likely never heard of.

The omakase spot opened its doors back in March 2024 and is the brainchild of chef Yoji Masuda, who honed his skills in Japan for over 13 years before returning to his hometown in Vancouver.

Sushi Masuda’s humble setting may surprise first-time visitors, but it’s a reminder that great food often hides in unassuming places.

Its only got five seats, making it an intimate and cozy omakase experience – basically the opposite from the theatrics that Okeya Kyujiro has.

The omakase course here starts at $230 per person and starts of with 4 – 5 appetizers and then a 10 – 12 course of nigiri.

Its chef-owner, Yoji Masuda, was also recognized with the Michelin Young Chef/Culinary Professional Award at the ceremony.

Similar to last year, no restaurants were downgraded from their one star status. This is slightly surprising considering how Toronto’s MICHELIN ceremony went.

The event also celebrated 1 additional Bib Gourmand designation: Gary’s, a delightful French cuisine spot in South Granville.

This award recognizes restaurants that provide great food at excellent value, and Gary’s certainly fits the bill.

With a cozy neighbourhood vibe, the eatery offers rustic, approachable dishes like asparagus with saffron rouille and pork collar with parsley sauce.

Meanwhile, Fraser Street’s Bravo and Zab Bite both were awarded Michelin Recommended statuses.

This year’s MICHELIN Guide includes a total of 76 restaurants, with 6 spots cut from the guide or was demoted:

  • Hanai (closed)
  • Regal Mansion (closed)
  • Elephant (closed)
  • Nightshade (closed)
  • Fiorino (previously Bib Gourmand)
  • Arike (closed; previously Bib Gourmand)
