‘What an Honor’: Jaden Smith Drops By a Yaletown Hand Roll Bar

One of Hollywood’s most famous last names walked into a Yaletown hand roll bar, and the staff have the photo to prove it.

Oshi Nori shared a photo with Noms Magazine of Jaden Smith posing with the team at its Mainland Street restaurant on August 5.

In the shot, the musician and actor stands arms crossed in a washed denim jacket in front of the restaurant’s glowing Oshi Nori sign, flanked by five smiling staff, one chef throwing a thumbs-up.

“What an honor! Thanks for dining with us, Jaden Smith,” the restaurant wrote on its story.

The shot ran on the restaurant’s Instagram story, and the team passed it along to Noms Magazine as well.

Smith, the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, has built his own lane across music, film, and fashion, and he has food-world credentials of his own as a co-founder of JUST Water and the philanthropic I Love You Restaurant project in Los Angeles.

This isn’t the first celebrity that made a stop at Oshi Nori.

Just in March, Nick Jonas dined at the restaurant.

Oshi Nori opened at 1055 Mainland Street in 2023, from restaurateur Paulo Lyra, whose portfolio spans Craffles, No Bad Days Cafe, Sharkys Chophouse, Braz Foods, and Omg It’s Vegan.

The name refers to pressed seaweed, a nod to the Osaka sushi style that presses rice and toppings into compact rectangles.

The room is built around one big move: a large square bar seating 40 to 50 diners, all watching chefs press and roll to order.

The nori itself is sourced from Japan’s Ariake Sea, prized for its minerality and smoky edge, and the hand roll list runs from six kinds of fish through lobster, crab, and scallop.

For a restaurant designed around watching the kitchen work, a celebrity at the counter is just the highest-wattage version of the everyday show.

Vancouver’s restaurants collect these moments every summer, with film and music schedules routing famous appetites through the city, and Yaletown’s patio-dense grid catches more than its share.

For everyone else, it is a reminder that the seat next to you at the big square bar is anyone’s to book.
