A long-empty corner unit at E 29th and Rupert finally has a tenant on the way.
Coasters Coffee, the New Westminster cafe that two sisters opened back in 2023, has put up coming soon signage at the building on East 29th Avenue and Rupert Street.
This looks like the brand’s first East Vancouver location.
The unit sits inside a building that has felt only half-occupied for a while now, with a tutoring business holding down one space and the other storefront sitting quiet through multiple seasons.
The signage in the window is the first real movement that corner has seen in a long stretch.
We peeked inside while we were on the block and the new spot is still bare concrete walls and empty floor, so an opening date is clearly a long way off.
If the format carries over from New West, the East Van outpost should lean into the same nature-meets-art aesthetic that defines the original.
Coasters Coffee pitches itself as a place where art and the natural world intertwine, with handcrafted tabletops sourced locally, local artwork lining the walls, and a soft invitation to sip, savor, and rediscover the beauty around you.
It is built less like a grab-and-go counter and more like a sit-down room you actually want to linger in, which is exactly what made the original work in New West.
The corner is a strong fit for that vibe.
Coasters Coffee will sit right beside Sir Wilfred Grenfell Elementary School field and a dense residential pocket, giving Rupert Street families and the school-run crowd another casual option in a stretch that has historically been thin on sit-down cafe space.
A sister-run cafe leaning into nature, slow drinks, and local art reads like the kind of third place that rewards lingering.
That tends to be exactly what a school-adjacent block with a lot of young families could use more of.
The team has not officially announced the East Vancouver location yet, and based on what we saw through the window, the buildout has barely started.
We will keep an eye on the buildout and update once Coasters Coffee shares an official opening date for the East Vancouver shop.
