A New Northern Vietnamese Spot Is Quietly Opening In The West End

The West End’s Denman Street strip is about to add another Vietnamese option to its already crowded lineup.

We spotted signs for a new Northern Vietnamese spot called No Ne quietly moving into the former Damso unit on Denman Street.

The reno staff on site shared with us that the restaurant is targeting an early May opening.

The space sat empty for a short stretch after Damso relocated up to Robson Street earlier this spring, and crews have since been working inside the unit to get it ready for No Ne’s debut.

According to the reno staff, the new spot will focus on Northern Vietnamese cuisine.

The team has not released a full menu yet, so the exact lineup of dishes is still under wraps.

Based on the logo and the early branding work, the kitchen looks like it may lean toward Vietnamese noodle bowls like pho and bun, though that has not been officially confirmed.

Northern Vietnamese cooking sits in a distinct corner of the country’s broader food landscape.

It traditionally leans into lighter, herb-forward broths and saltier, more savoury seasoning compared to the sweeter southern style that most Vancouver Vietnamese restaurants tend to default to.

The West End is far from short on places to grab a bowl of pho or a vermicelli plate.

Several long-running pho counters and a handful of newer Vietnamese restaurants already line Denman and Robson, so any new entrant has to bring something the room does not already cover.

A more focused Northern Vietnamese menu, if executed well, could help No Ne carve out a distinct lane in the neighbourhood.

No Ne now joins a growing list of upcoming Vancouver food spots, including Chayan, OIDE LABO, and Emeri Matcha.
