September 13 is the last morning anyone gets a mochi donut on West 4th.
Their There, the brunch cafe and mochi donut shop that has anchored the middle of the strip since 2018, closes that day after eight years in Kitsilano.
The team announced the closure back in May, redrawing their “tt” logo as a frown and pointing to the end of their lease.
They had reached the end of the current term, they wrote, and had not come to terms that aligned with how the business runs.
The post framed the summer as a long goodbye rather than a shutdown, and thanked every guest, regular and staff member who built the place.
That summer is over now.
Nothing has changed since about where they go next.
There has been no relocation announcement, no new neighbourhood named and no timeline given.
The comment section reacted the way a neighbourhood does when it loses a default. Regulars filled it with crying emojis and one simply wrote “I AM CRYING.”
Another landed harder. “This is why nothing cool ever stays on West 4th.”
A third started campaigning immediately, asking them to come to Commercial Drive, which was echoed by a few others pointing east.
That would follow a pattern Kitsilano has been living through for years, as independents priced out of West 4th rents reopen along the East Vancouver corridors instead.
Whether Their There does that is still unknown, and the team has not said anything beyond the original post.
As the city counts down to final days, locals have shown up to get their last mochi donut.
For eight years this has been one of the neighbourhood’s default brunch and mochi donut stops, and the pair of “tt” eyes on the sign was as recognizable on the block as the surf shops around it.
If you do want to get your hands on a mochi donut, you’ll need to get early.
Their There joins other recent Vancouver closures including Fable Kitchen in Kitsilano, Vegan Shoku in Kerrisdale, and Sushi Aboard.
