It looks like Kingsway has quietly lost another food spot.
And unless you passed by recently, you probably wouldn’t have noticed.
Sumo Grill, the Japanese yakiniku restaurant on Kingsway, has officially closed, with signage now up for a new concept called Hot Spot Buffet.

We first spotted the change when driving by the unit and noticed Sumo Grill’s branding had vanished.
A quick Google search confirmed the news: the restaurant is now marked as Permanently closed.
Sumo Grill originally opened in September 2023, taking over the former Honolulu Café space and offering an elevated take on Japanese BBQ.
The menu featured various grill sets with standout cuts like chilled Japanese F1 flat iron, koji-marinated short rib, beef tongue, and even A5 wagyu.
Its last Instagram post was from February 11th, promoting a Valentine’s Day set.
Based on Google reviews, the restaurant likely shuttered sometime in March.
The restaurant was owned by the same team behind Yushang Hotpot, which also closed back in August 2024.
Now, the space is already being transformed.
New signage for Hot Spot Buffet is up, hinting at a shift from Japanese grill to a more hot pot–focused buffet experience.
Sumo Grill joins a growing list of recent Metro Vancouver closures, including Potato Corner, Tiko Pizza, Mama’s Diner, Wabakuro, and Mama Rich.
