Amay’s House Returns: Beloved Burmese Restaurant Reopens on Kingsway

Good news for the foodies who’ve missed this local gem!

Amay’s House, the much-loved family-run Burmese restaurant that closed its doors in 2022, has made a quiet yet highly anticipated comeback.

The restaurant reopened on October 27th at its new location on Kingsway.

A New Space With The Same Old Charm

Located at a spot previously occupied by Fighter Chicken, the new Amay’s House offers a similar cozy and homey ambiance that its previous spot had and continues to perfectly complement its authentic Burmese and Asian cuisine.

According to the owner, they initially intended to reopen in Surrey but that fell through.

They eventually settled on the Kingsway location, which they found to be more centralized, had better visibility, and more convenient for their previous customers.

What’s On The Menu?

Fans will be happy to hear that the menu remains largely unchanged.

Much-loved dishes like Shrimp Laksa, Mohinga (catfish soup), Burmese-Style Samosas, and Myanmar Tea Leaf Salad are all still available.

The restaurant currently operates on a cash-only basis, so customers should plan accordingly.

A Brief History of Amay’s House

The restaurant is a family-run business owned by Hihaa Kyaw and his wife, Mya Nyunt.

Before moving to Canada in the late ’90s, Mr. Kyaw worked as a cook at the four-star Inya Lake Hotel in Yangon, Myanmar.

Amay’s House first opened its doors on Victoria Drive in 2013, quickly gaining a reputation for its authentic and flavourful dishes.

Maintaining the Culinary Spirit

During its brief hiatus, Amay’s House continued to share its culinary magic with the community by operating a stall at the Richmond Night Market under the name “Burmese Cuisine.”

This temporary setup kept the spirit of Amay’s House alive and even built up anticipation for the restaurant’s return, as locals visiting the stall were informed of the upcoming new location.

The reopening of Amay’s House is good news for the local food scene, which has been unfortunately packed with closure news.

With a new location that retains the same old-world charm and a menu that still features fan favourites, Amay’s House is poised for a successful new chapter.
