The Heights doesn’t get the same hype as Metrotown or Brentwood, but anyone who’s spent time on Hastings Street knows it’s quietly one of the best food stretches in Burnaby.

The Bite of Burnaby food festival is back from March 1 to 31 with over 75 participating restaurants across the city.

We’ve rounded up five of the best deals in The Heights neighbourhood so you don’t have to scroll through the full list yourself.

1. Chad Thai

Family-run Chad Thai has been a staple for affordable eats for more than a decade.

Chad Thai’s is back for a great take out Bite of Burnaby option, giving you three set options to pick from.

Set 1 is boat noodles with pork, Set 2 is pad Thai with chicken or tofu, and Set 3 is curry and rice with your choice of five curry sauces including green, red, panang, mussamun, and yellow.

Every set comes with either three chicken wontons or a veggie spring roll, plus a Thai iced tea, Thai iced coffee, or juice.

At $20 all in, this is the budget king of the Heights list.

Price: $20 (takeout only)
Address: 4010 Hastings Street, Burnaby, BC

2. Butchers Block BBQ

If you and a friend have been debating where to get BBQ in Burnaby, this debate is over.

Here you’ll definitely get the meat sweats.

For this year’s Bite of Burnaby, they’re offering a BBQ sampler platter for two at $55, and it’s loaded.

Loaded with smoked brisket, BBQ side ribs, smoked chicken, and smoked pulled pork.

You also get your choice of two sides and two cornbreads.

That’s four different smoked meats on one platter, which is honestly more than enough to justify the price.

Especially since you’ll likely have left overs too!

This is the kind of meal where you don’t talk for the first 10 minutes because everyone’s too busy eating.

Price: $55 (for 2)
Address: 4091 Hastings Street, Burnaby, BC

3. Crema Ice Cream

Crema’s seasonal Sakura Matcha Bloom is the prettiest thing on this list and it’s only $10!

You’re getting layers of chocolate and pistachio crunch on the bottom, creamy matcha sakura ice cream in the middle, raspberry coulis, and fluffy whipped cream on top.

It’s finished with a sprinkle of matcha powder and their homemade sakura jellies made from scratch.

It’s the kind of thing you’ll photograph before you eat, and honestly that’s fine because it looks incredible.

If you’re not in the mood for a full meal but still want to hit up a Bite of Burnaby spot, this is the move.

Price: $10
Address: 418 Willingdon Avenue, Burnaby, BC

4. Portobello Ristorante

This is the splurge pick, and it earns it.

Portobello’s three-course Bite of Burnaby menu is $49 and reads like a proper Italian dinner.

Portobello’s been a staple on Hastings for years and the vibe is classic Italian without being stuffy about it.

Start with an insalata caesar or raviolini in brodo, then move on to mains like spaghetti di mare with prawns and halibut, scalloppine di vitello alla pizzaiola, or chicken parmigiana.

Finish with their house-made panna cotta al limone.

Heads up, they’re only open Wednesday to Sunday from 5:30 p.m. so plan accordingly.

Price: $49
Address: 4120 Hastings Street East, Burnaby, BC

Can’t decide between Vietnamese and Thai?

H&P’s got you covered with two set menus for two people at $48 each.

The Viet Lover set starts with chicken or shrimp spring rolls, then you pick two mains from House Special Pho, Bun Rieu crab noodle soup, Bun Bo Hue, or vermicelli with chicken.

Each person also gets a Thai iced tea or Vietnamese iced coffee.

The Thai Lover set opens with a house mango salad, then two mains from options like pad Thai, red or green curry, Thai fried rice, golden curry, pad sew, or Thai basil noodle, all with chicken and shrimp.

That one also comes with fried banana and ice cream for dessert.

Dine in only, max two combo deals per table, and you can’t stack other promos on top.

They’re open until midnight most nights so this is a solid late-night option too.
