If you have ever walked down Kingsway near Main Street, you have probably noticed Budgie’s Burritos.
The vegetarian Tex-Mex spot has been feeding the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood since 2005.
That is over 20 years of scratch-made burritos, quesadillas, and tacos out of the same little shop.
Now they are giving locals another reason to stop by and support local businesses.
Budgie’s just launched a new weekly promotion called Cheap Monday.
Every Monday, all burritos on the menu are $10 and beers are $3.
There is no end date for the deal.
According to Michelle, the restaurant’s manager, the promotion will run every Monday for the foreseeable future.
The timing is not a coincidence.
On January 26, the block of Broadway between Main and Quebec streets fully closed for four months as part of the Broadway Subway Project.
Construction crews are removing the temporary road deck that was built over the future Mount Pleasant Station site.
Buses and local traffic have been rerouted, which means fewer people are passing through the area on their usual routes.
For small businesses near the closure, that is a real problem.
Budgie’s sits just a block south on Kingsway, right by the impact zone.
Rather than wait it out, the team decided to give people a reason to make the trip.
A $10 burrito and a $3 beer on a Monday is a pretty solid reason.
For anyone who has not been, Budgie’s is fully vegetarian.
Everything is made from scratch with fresh ingredients daily, and they offer vegan versions of most items along with plenty of gluten-free options.
It is the kind of place where you can grab a massive burrito for lunch and not think twice about what is in it.
The restaurant has quietly built a loyal following over two decades without ever chasing trends or opening second locations.
It is a neighbourhood staple in the truest sense.
One lane in each direction is expected to reopen after the four-month closure, with all lanes back by summer.

They are open Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm and closed on Sundays.
