Burnaby Banh Mi Spot Quietly Shuts Down After Just 3 Months

It looks like another food spot has closed.

This time, it’s Ngon Cafe’s Kingsway Metrotown location.

The Vietnamese banh mi and coffee spot, which opened in August 2024, appears to have shut down quietly.

Ngon Cafe’s second outpost was meant to bring quick, take-out-friendly banh mi and Vietnamese coffee to the bustling Metrotown area.

Taking over the former Guulu Cafe space, it offered eight different banh mi options, from the classic cold cut to halal grilled chicken, along with Vietnamese coffee favourites like the coco coffee frappe and salted cream coffee.

Unlike their original Vancouver Kingsway spot, this one didn’t serve noodle dishes but catered to the grab-and-go crowd with a small pastry selection and a minimalist four-seat counter.

Back in December 2024, we drove by and saw the windows covered up with a sign that read the shop was Temporarily closed for renovations.

But fast forward to late January 2025, we spotted a brand-new shop called Master Bao is gearing up to take over the space.

This suggests Ngon Cafe’s closure wasn’t just a temporary break after all.

The state of the food industry continues to be tough, and it seems Ngon Cafe’s expansion to Burnaby didn’t pan out as planned.

The current economic climate has made it increasingly difficult for small food businesses to survive, and this is yet another example of a spot quietly disappearing from the scene.

Their original Kingsway location seems to remain open for business and no closure announcement is seen on Ngon’s website or social media.

Did you get a chance to try Ngon Cafe’s banh mi before they closed?
