Popular Korean Street Food Stall Under a Staircase Is Closing For 6 Months

If you know, you know.

And if you do not know yet, you have about a couple of days left to find out.

Kim’s Korean Waffles and Pancakes, the tiny street food stall tucked under the stairs at Hannam Market Plaza in Burnaby, is closing for the season on March 31.

The stall will be gone for six months, so this is your last chance to grab their hotteok and bungeoppang until the fall.

For those unfamiliar, Kim’s Korean Waffles is one of those spots that locals in the Burnaby and Coquitlam Koreatown area have been quietly going to for years.

It is not flashy as it is literally a small stall underneath a staircase beside Hannam Market on North Road.

But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in everything else.

The stall has been operating in the same spot since September 2002, making it over 23 years old.

It was one of the first places to introduce Korean street food waffles to Canada.

The menu is simple and that is the point.

Hotteok, the sweet Korean pancakes made with glutinous rice flour dough and filled with brown sugar and cinnamon, go for $2 each or six for $10.

Bungeoppang, the fish-shaped pastries filled with either red bean or custard, are $1.25 each or five for $5.

Everything is made fresh right in front of you on the griddle. That means you might wait a bit, but regulars will tell you it is worth it every single time.

The hotteok has a chewy texture that fans say reminds them of the real thing from street stalls in South Korea.

For under $5, it is one of the best cheap eats in Metro Vancouver.

If you have never been, this is the time.

Once March 31 hits, you will have to wait until the fall to get your fix.
