Another restaurant shuffle has quietly happened in Burnaby.
A Noms Mag community member recently spotted that Sushi Bay, the sushi and oyster bar that replaced the infamous Chicken Plus x Sulbing spot on Kingsway, has now shuttered.
And in its place, a brand new eatery called Passion1818 Sushi Kaya is moving in.

From the posted signage, Passion1818 will offer sushi, handrolls, and izakaya-style food, suggesting a more contemporary Japanese dining experience than its predecessor.
This marks the second business to cycle through the same location in under a year.
Back in November 2024, Sushi Bay took over the controversial Chicken Plus x Sulbing unit.
The latter was best known for sparking national outrage after a viral Reddit post exposed their payment terminal that covered up the “no tip” option with a sticker.
That sneaky move, paired with consistently bad reviews and a confusing self-service model, ultimately doomed the fried chicken and bingsu concept.
Unfortunately, Sushi Bay didn’t seem to fare much better.
While it didn’t make negative headlines like its predecessor, its quiet exit from the scene suggests the location continued to struggle with customer traction and foot traffic.
The reviews seem to be a hit or miss as customers pointed at sand in the oysters.
That said, there’s hope that Passion1818 Sushi Kaya will break the streak.
Passion1818 now joins a growing roster of upcoming new Burnaby food spots like Chen, Hei Hei Rice Roll Crystal Mall, and Meat Up Burnaby.
