An iconic Vancouver Chinatown classic is officially growing its legacy.
Kam Wai Dim Sum, a longtime staple of Vancouver’s dim sum scene, is opening a new location in the Hastings Sunrise neighbourhood.
We spotted signs for the new location taking over the former Viet Thanh Supermarket unit.
Known for serving the community since 1990, Kam Wai has been a go-to for frozen and ready-to-eat dim sum staples like ha gow, siu mai, BBQ pork buns, and dumplings.
For over 30 years and across four generations, they’ve remained a fixture in Chinatown’s food landscape, welcoming regulars and first-timers into their family-run world of Cantonese comfort.
In 2020, the original Chinatown store went through a renovation as part of Vancouver and Chinatown BIA’s revitalization efforts.
And now, they’re bringing that same warmth and flavour to a brand new corner of the city.
The upcoming outpost is called Kam Wai Legacy, and it’s not just a name.
Nick Sommer, Kam Wai’s Director of Marketing, told Noms Magazine that this new location is all about honouring the Liu family’s roots while evolving with the times.
“Kam Wai Dim Sum is a family run business that has been in the Chinatown neighbourhood for nearly 35 years, so Kam Wai Legacy is an extension of that – Our Legacy as a business, as well as a manifestation of the Legacy of the Liu family. For us, that looks like honouring our past while looking to the future.”
The Legacy location will still offer their popular frozen and prepare-at-home dim sum.
But it’s also expanding into new territory with a bigger hot food menu, street food from Hong Kong and Taiwan, and even a line of Hong Kong–style drinks.
Plus, they’re growing their lifestyle side with books, gifts, and apparel.
So why Hastings Sunrise?
According to Nick, they’d been eyeing expansion for a while.
And when the opportunity came up in this vibrant, diverse neighbourhood, it felt like the perfect fit.
“We were (and still are!) excited at the idea of becoming a part of that community,” Nick said.
If all goes to plan, Kam Wai Legacy is set to open its doors in early August.
