Downtown Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood is seeing yet another food spot close its doors.
Amid the series of turnovers in the area, Davie Dosa Company, a South Indian restaurant beloved for its dosas, shut down in late October.
A community member (@jonathan.uy) spotted a goodbye sign appearing in of the restaurant’s front window.
The sign thanked the community for their support since the restaurant opened in 2017 and signaling that it was time to say farewell.
Davie Dosa Company was known for its signature vegan and non-vegan dosas— a long crisp, cylinder crepe-like dishes made from rice and lentils, served with lentil dip and tomato chutney.
The menu also offered a variety of South Indian plates, curries like Korma and Butter Chicken, biryani, and more.
The restaurant prided itself on using locally sourced produce to create all of its chutneys and sauces from scratch, providing guests with affordable, authentic flavours right in the heart of Davie Street.
Despite its popularity, the closure appears to be due to circumstances out of their control.
In the restaurant’s most recent post, the caption states that “this is not our choice to say good bye… but forced to..”
According to a previous report by Vancouver is Awesome, the restaurant’s lease was not extended by the landlord—an increasingly common reason for closures in the current economic climate.
The good thing?
It seems that the restaurant may return in another form or location as the final Instagram post did tease that “we will reconnect once we find our new home.”
Davie Dosa Company now joins a growing list of West End closures this year, including Menya Itto, Daigyo, and Joong Won.
It’s a tough loss for fans of South Indian cuisine in the area.
