It looks like another bite-sized food trend has come to an end in Downtown Vancouver.
A recent stroll past Robson Public Market revealed that the tiny unit by the entrance, once home to SugarCoat Tanghulu Shop, has been completely emptied out.
With no signage left and the space now up for lease, it’s safe to say the tanghulu craze has come and gone.

SugarCoat opened back in May 2024, right when the viral tanghulu craze was hitting peak popularity.
Originally a northern Chinese street snack, tanghulu features skewered fruit like strawberries, grapes, and oranges, coated in a crisp, glossy shell of hardened sugar.
Its satisfying crunch and shiny aesthetic made it an instant hit on TikTok and Instagram, drawing buzz throughout the world.
At SugarCoat, the menu had green grape, mandarin orange, strawberry, pineapple, and other fresh fruit variations.
It’s believed that SugarCoat was connected to one of the food stalls inside Robson Public Market’s second-floor food court, though that was never clearly confirmed.
It is hard to say when exactly the shop shut down as the shop had inconsistent hours.
But the unit is now covered up and up for lease as of early June.
Now, SugarCoat joins a growing list of recent Downtown Vancouver food spot closures like Zefferelli’s, Pizzeria Farina, and Archer.
