Heads up if youโve picked up any chocolate snacks lately.
The previous recall issued for several pistachio and knafeh milk chocolate products sold due to possible salmonella contamination has now extended to BC.
According to reports by Global News, 3 people in BC have now gotten sick and more than 50 nationwide.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a warning on August 14, stating that multiple brands are affected, including Chocofolie, Chocolato, Chocolats Favoris, Dubai, and Vincent Sรฉlection.
The products in question are 145g milk chocolate bars infused with pistachio and knafeh, a popular Middle Eastern dessert ingredient.
While none of the affected items may appear spoiled, they could still cause serious illness, especially in young children, seniors, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems.
So far, the recall applies to online orders and retail sales in BC, Ontario, and Quebec. All lots within specific code ranges from each brand are being pulled.
A few notable listings include:
- Chocofolieโs โChocolat Dubaรฏโ with codes from 225097 to 225184
- Chocolats Favorisโ โDubai Chocolateโ with codes from 225133 to 225203
- Dubai brandโs version with UPC 6 11834 51237 1, from codes 225093 to 225184
According to the CFIA, the recall was triggered during an investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak, which has now prompted the Public Health Agency of Canada to step in.
More products may be recalled as the investigation continues.
If you have one of these chocolates in your pantry, do not eat it.
Toss it out or return it to the place of purchase.
And if youโve eaten one and are feeling unwell, itโs best to check in with a healthcare provider.
Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
In more serious cases, it can lead to long-term complications like arthritis or worse.
