If you have a morning ritual of grabbing a quick onigiri on East Hastings, your week probably felt a little off.
The neighborhood has officially lost its go-to spot for Japanese snacks and convenience items.
Kanadell Ya has permanently closed its doors.
The Japanese convenience store officially ceased operations on November 30.

If you walk by the storefront now, the absence is already noticeable on the block.
The closure follows a “final sale” week where the shop offered 20 percent off to clear out their inventory of chips, drinks, and pantry staples.
Naturally, regulars were shocked by the sudden announcement that came just before the end of the month.
Even though the closure is now final, the team tried to soften the blow in their announcement.
They reminded everyone that Kanadell Bakery, located right beside the store, would continue operating as usual.
Even better, they are absorbing the best parts of the closed shop.

It feels like a small relief in a month where closures keep piling up around the city.
Even better, they are absorbing the best parts of the closed shop.
You will still be able to find their famous onigiri and bakery goods inside the bakery itself.
They are also keeping stock of their brand products, including the popular Mini Mochi Flour Mix and Mochiko Pancake Mix.

Now that the doors are closed, all eyes turn toward the bakery.
Kanadell Ya’s closure joins a growing list of businesses that have recently disappeared across Metro Vancouver, including T+ Patisserie, Bar Haifa, and Mojo Cantina Izakaya.
