Quiet closures are becoming more common as economic turbulence continues to take its toll on local food spots.
Unfortunately, one of Burnaby’s cafes has quietly joined that list.
Bread x Butter Cafe has closed its Burnaby outpost across from Metrotown without a formal announcement or final goodbye.
Bread x Butter, known for its fluffy scrambled egg toasts, opened its Burnaby location back in April 2023.
The outpost took over the previous One Bowl Feast unit along Kingsway, with high hopes of bringing its well-loved egg sandos, gourmet sandwiches, and simple breakfast options to the Burnaby area.
However, just a year and a half later, the signage is gone, and in its place, a new Thai boat noodle shop is set to open this weekend.
Unlike the bustling Downtown Vancouver location, which remains a favourite for quick breakfast or lunch among local professionals, the Burnaby location was a smaller, cozy cafe with a more limited menu.
It focused on items like the Truffle Mushroom, Pork Floss, and Hawaiian Luau egg toasts, as well as light drinks and soup.
But the Burnaby spot struggled more than its downtown counterpart, with more negative reviews from customers that might have contributed to its ultimate closure.
The closure seems to have happened back in September, and without any official word from Bread x Butter Cafe, it joins the many food spots opting for quiet exits in these challenging times.
While the Burnaby outpost may be gone, their Downtown Vancouver location at Cathedral Place continues to serve up those beloved fluffy egg toasts and keeps the brand alive for now.
