Among all the recent closures we’ve been reporting on, we’re sadly starting the month off by sharing a different kind of news today.
First Table, the international online dining site that made its North American debut in Vancouver in November 2019, is ceasing its operations in Canada.
Launched in New Zealand in 2014, First Table carved out a niche by connecting food enthusiasts with local eateries, offering an enticing deal: 50% off the food bill during specified times.
This allowed diners to explore new dining experiences without the usual expense, turning the luxury of eating out into a more accessible routine.
Participating restaurants would list their available ‘first tables’ (a table at 5PM) for the coming week on the platform, enabling customers who paid a $10 booking fee to secure the 50% OFF discount.
Over the years, First Table expanded its offerings, allowing customers to book not just the first table of the dinner service but also the last, and even for breakfast or lunch.
Highly-rated restaurants like Fiorino, Sprezzura, Water St. Cafe, El Santo, Gastronomy Gastown, and Cibo Trattoria were part of the First Table platform.
On March 1st, First Table CEO Mat Weir delivered the somber news through the platform’s newsletter, announcing the discontinuation of First Table’s services in Canada effective March 31, 2024.
Weir’s message highlighted the suddenness of this announcement for many and extended heartfelt thanks to Canadian patrons and restaurant partners for their support.
The platform will continue to operate in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
