As the title says, there’s some unfortunate news for New Westminster’s food scene.
Just announced yesterday by owner Marco Cornale on the Fratelli European Bakery’s official Instagram, the New Westminster location will shutter after more than ten years of service.
Fratelli – meaning brothers in Italian – first opened in 1997 on Commercial Drive, after Marco’s brother approached him to start a bakery together.
The New Westminster location subsequently opened in August 2013 and has built a reputation for custom cakes and a variety of baked goods like biscotti, cannolis and tiramisu tart.
In the announcement, Marco expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the community for embracing the bakery and making it a vibrant part of New Westminster.
Marco goes on to explain that he received news on Boxing Day that the bakery’s building was sold, with the new owners planning to repurpose the space into a dentist’s office.
This unexpected turn of events brings a bittersweet end to Fratelli’s decade-long journey in New Westminster.
The bakery’s final day of operation in New Westminster will be June 1, 2024.
“I did not expect it to end this way,” says Marco.
Near the end of the announcement, Marco confirms that he has no intention to reopen the bakery in another location.
He is looking to focus on the Commercial Drive bakery and use the opportunity to spend more time with his family.
Being such an important cornerstone to the New Westminster community, many customers flooded Marco’s announcement post with thanks and memories.
