Walking around the city these days, it’s hard not to notice the changes.
Every stroll reveals another for lease sign, another favourite spot shutting its doors.
It’s a tough time for the food industry in our city, and it seems like the challenges are only mounting.
On a recent patrol through Richmond, a for lease sign caught our eye, signaling the end of an era for a beloved dessert spot at any time.
Hui Lau Shan, the renowned Hong Kong-based dessert chain celebrated for its mango delights, is now listed for sale for its Richmond location.
This isn’t the first location of the mango brand in Metro Vancouver, it had been unsuccessful in Denman and Kerrisdale previously.
But the Richmond outpost wasn’t just any Hui Lau Shan.
It stood out with its unique offerings and stunning decor, setting it apart from the rest.
Just recently it started featuring dim sum alongside their famous mango desserts, all enjoyed in an ambiance of flowers, pink, and gold.
Hui Lau Shan’s journey began in the 1960s as a humble herbal tea and jelly trolley in Yuen Long, Hong Kong. By the 1990s, they had shifted focus to mango desserts, and a decade later, they introduced fresh fruit drinks to their repertoire.
The Richmond location, opened its doors in March 2023 after a slight delay due to the pandemic.
Noms Magazine has reached out to Hui Lau Shan for a comment but we did not hear back at the time of publish.
A peek at Spacelist reveals the 1214 sq. ft space is up for grabs at $9510/mo, signaling an end to this chapter.
