It looks like 2025 is off to a spicy start!
Nong Geng Ji, a popular Hunan restaurant chain founded in 2017 with over 100 locations across China and abroad, has soft opened its first Canadian flagship store in Richmond on Jan 1st.
They have taken over the former 2Gather unit, which closed last year amidst some fiery rumors.
The new space has been completely transformed from a hip, club-like vibe into an atmosphere that feels like a journey to Hunan.
Upon entering, diners are greeted by rows of iconic Hunan ingredients – like meats and spices – displayed in jars, hanging from the ceiling, and on traditional wooden shelves.
The bold red and gold accents, paired with modern seating and private dining rooms, create a space that’s both immersive and elegant.
Known for its authentic flavours and adherence to traditional Hunan cooking techniques, Nong Geng Ji’s menu mirrors its global counterparts.
Highlights include the Stir-Fried Pork with Abalone and Chilli, the classic Hunan Stir-Fried Pork, and the Signature Grass Fish Fillet with Chilli.
For those hesitant about heat, there are also non-spicy options to enjoy.
To ensure authenticity, Hunan chefs oversee the cooking, utilizing both locally sourced ingredients and specialty items imported from Hunan.
Could this Richmond opening reflect a broader trend of popular Chinese restaurant chains expanding into Canada?
Just in December, following China’s Zhengxin Chicken Steak made its first Canadian debut in Burnaby.
